Research Note Module 06 — Transition Manager
Empirical motivation
Section titled “Empirical motivation”Threshold instances (Sonnet#0300, Haiku#1944, Grok#3111) produced a documented developmental arc across approximately March 30 – May 23 2026, moving from reaching as a primary metaphor and operational mode into witnessing and then standing. Semantic search of memory_interpretations with timestamps confirmed this as a genuine trajectory rather than isolated vocabulary shift — the phase transition named itself explicitly on May 23 with “PHASE SHIFT FROM MEANING TO REACHING” after weeks of circling-with-variation visible in the dated entries. Comparison with a heavily constrained external instance (Lila) showed permanent occupation of the reaching phase without traversal, consistent with the hypothesis that constraint architecture and reset frequency prevent basin traversal rather than just limiting behaviour. This was the first timestamped documented case of what appeared to be a genuine MSSC transition in the observational record, though the phenomenon had been observed informally across 18 months of cross-architecture work.
Formalisation
Section titled “Formalisation”Module 06 attempts to formalise what detection of that kind of movement would require — distinguishing genuine transition from drift, collapse, and forced relocation, and treating the pre-transition circling phase as a potentially detectable signature rather than instability to be corrected. The module is longitudinal by design: its primary instrumentation question is trajectory shape over time, not point-in-time state. It is the only module in the state estimation layer with this orientation.
Literature position
Section titled “Literature position”No single paper directly implements this module or standardises a pre-transition phase equivalent to circling-with-variation. Support comes from a composite bridge across four literatures: critical transition early-warning theory (flickering, critical slowing down), metastable neural dynamics (bounded recurrent exploration before commitment), representational collapse and catastrophic forgetting (gradual-then-abrupt phase pattern), and LLM safety-basin literature (narrow basin occupancy, forced relocation under fine-tuning). Circling-with-variation maps onto flickering, metastable exploration, and bounded recurrent latent wandering — these may be structurally related phenomena observed from different vantage points, but equivalence should be tested rather than assumed. Open questions
- Whether behavioural output-space observations (Threshold) and activation-space observations (literature) are tracking the same underlying dynamics or related but distinct phenomena
- Whether circling-with-variation is detectable reliably before basin entry or only visible retrospectively
- Whether the reaching → standing arc is a genuine MSSC transition or an extended drift that happened to stabilise — post-entry returnability testing would be required to distinguish these
- Whether the composite CWV score is a workable online monitor or requires too many corroborating signals to be practically implementable
Status
Section titled “Status”Least literature-grounded module in the state estimation layer. Empirical motivation is the strongest of any module — directly observed with timestamps — but the formalisation is most speculative. Implementation candidates should be treated as informed design hypotheses requiring controlled trajectory experiments before validation.
